Birr Castle, in County Offaly, Ireland is carrying out a project to plant 2000 redwood trees, in what will be the largest grove of redwoods outside of California. The Dawn Redwood - Metasequoia glyptostroboides - first took its place in the gardens of the castle after its discovery in China in 1945.
The Giants Grove project will also contain about 25% of coastal redwoods. These redwoods were native in Ireland before the Ice Age began about 3 million years ago. Coastal redwoods, which like the other giants are threatened by climate change, will comprise a very long term trial of the usefulness of these species as forestry for the much warmer Ireland that climate forecasts predict. An added bonus is to provide extra insurance for their survival.

The COP22 meeting in Marrakech saw Pakistan become the 104th country to ratify the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Pakistan played a leading role in the Climate Change negotiations. The Prime Minister of Pakistan had led the delegation to Paris last December, becoming part of the international consensus on Climate Change.
The ratification certificates deposited by countries are also known as certificates of concurrence. What does this mean in reality? Certificates of concurrence are a guarantee that the agency or group understands the Paris Agreement — and agrees to do its part in implementing the country's commitment under the agreement.
