The idea of the Earth Charter originated in 1987, Influenced by Mikhail Gorbachev and Maurice Strong, both members of the 'club of Rome'. From such beginnings it has grown to inspire a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the whole human family, the wider community, and that of future generations.
The Rainforest Alliance knows that the health of the land is bound up with the wellbeing of the people who depend on it for their livelihoods. They promote healthy ecosystems and communities in some of the world’s most vulnerable places. They work with the people to conserve natural resources and ensure the long-term economic health of forest communities.

CAFOD is the official aid agency for the Catholic Church in England and Wales. Donations received at home are channelled to projects in many countries around the world. They believe that climate change is the single biggest threat to reducing poverty. A member of the Climate Coalition, they carry out projects among the poorest communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

Trees4Life is a global environmental charity run by a small number of volunteers. They realise that trees have the power to help save the environment and preserve the planet for generations to come. Trees are able to use the energy of sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into chemical compounds such as sugars. As a by-product of that chemical reaction oxygen is given off.
This charity is committed to working with people and organisations across the globe to plant more trees and protect the world's precious forests. |
Medecins sans Frontieres, (MSF - 'Doctors without Borders' - ) was founded in 1971 - to help communities around the globe. The group was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, and became much more well known as a result of this. They give assistance to populations in desperate need, to victims of natural or man-made disasters, and to victims of armed conflict. Their website is rich in information about their activities, and they raise their voice against injustice.

Christian Aid is a well-known charity - its vision is an end to poverty - and it believes this is possible. The charity works in partnership with communities across the globe. People of all faiths - and none - are supported in projects to relieve distress and bring people out of poverty. Climate change is here recognised as a major issue in the relief of poverty. |

The Climate Centre, is a specialist reference centre of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). This is a Public Benefit Organization established under Netherlands law,
The aim is to help the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and its partners reduce the impacts of climate change and extreme-weather events on vulnerable people. The Climate Centre is staffed largely by climate scientists, and it provides strategically important knowledge and advice on climate-smart practice throughout the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and beyond. |
Global Ocean is a marine conservation charity, established in 2006. They aim to educate and raise awareness about the importance of healthy oceans for sustaining life. As well as striking graphics of marine life, their website gives much useful information, including the effects of plastic pollution. The U.K., India and United Arab Emirates are featured on this site. |

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is the leading international body for the assessment of climate change. It was established by the UNEP and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988 to provide the world with a clear scientific view on the current state of knowledge in climate change and its potential environmental and socio-economic impacts.
As an intergovernmental body, membership of the IPCC is open to all member countries of the UN and WMO. Governments participate in the review process and the plenary Sessions, where main decisions about the IPCC work programme are taken and reports are accepted, adopted and approved. |
