The Ocean Floor under threat

4/11/2018

In a recent study carried out by McGill University, it was found that human activity is causing the ocean floor to dissolve rapidly.  Noting that the seabed has a critical role in neutralizing the acidity of the water,  the simulations created by the research team showed that this process was threatened by the rising temperatures resulting from human activity on the planet.
The deep sea bed which is normally chalky white, is made largely from mineral calcite, through the accumulation of skeletons of shells, and other marine life, and corals.  Because of temperature rises, the seabed is turning muddy brown as the calcite is being dissolved.  This resulting acidification of sea water could have a profound effect on marine ecosystems in the future.
