The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has reported that temperatures for the months January to September 2016 were 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels. The WMO also observe that 16 of the 17 hottest years on record have been this century (in the previous century the hottest year was 1998).
Data already in for October points to 2016 as being the hottest year on record.
Although the El Nino event had a powerful effect on temperatures this was very short term. The heat from global warming is a continuing serious problem.
