6/1/2017

Reported three days ago by the BBC, the scientific achievement to turn carbon molecules into a usable product  (baking soda), has caused ripples around the world.  Though on a smaller scale than many other projects concerned with the carbon emission problem, it is a signal of hope in this important, and urgent, area.  Tamil Nadu became known to many people some years ago, for less happy reasons.  How fortunate that success has been won here in the climate change battle.

China Launch of CO2 Monitoring Satellite

There are now three satellites whose work includes measuring CO2 emissions across the globe. China launched its satellite towards the end of December 2016, joining the efforts already in place by Japan and America.

Scientists in these three countries now have the capability to measure how much CO2 is escaping into the atmosphere, and from which areas - a notable achievement which must be helpful to the Paris Agreement. China has already been reducing its heavy dependence on coal, not least because the pollution caused to the people on the ground has been increasingly damaging to health.

Scientists say the development of this technology depends on whether the National Research Council endorses the mission in its next Earth Science Decadal Survey, which represents a consensus of the most important research areas and the order in which they should be built.
