Climbers who have trouble breathing near the top of Everest might be suffering from more than thin air. Research shows the Tibetan plateau is surrounded by a ring of ozone comparable to that in a heavily-polluted city, putting climbers at risk .
This extra dose of ozone could be devastating to climbers of Everest and K2, giant peaks in the Himalayas.  Read the full article on this fascinating tale . . . .

Reach for the Sky - the Giant Redwood

Birr Castle, in County Offaly, Ireland is carrying out a project to plant 2000 redwood trees, in what will be the largest  grove of redwoods outside of California.  The Dawn Redwood - Metasequoia glyptostroboides  -  first took its place in the gardens of the castle after its discovery in China in 1945.

The Giants Grove project will also contain about 25% of coastal redwoods. These redwoods were native in Ireland before the Ice Age began about 3 million years ago. Coastal redwoods, which like the other giants are threatened by climate change, will comprise a very long term trial of the usefulness of these species as forestry for the much warmer Ireland that climate forecasts predict.  An added bonus is to provide extra insurance for their survival.

A campaign in the U.K. wants investments in fossil fuels to be brought to an end. Move instead to investment in renewable energy?  Banks are targeted - because billions are spent by banks in companies which produce gas, coal and oil.

In addition to the pressure on high street banks, the Governor of the Bank of England is warning that companies which rely on fossil fuels could end up with "stranded assets" - not a happy outcome for investors.

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has reported that temperatures for the months January to September 2016 were 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels. The WMO also observe that 16 of the 17 hottest years on record have been this century (in the previous century the hottest year was 1998).
Data already in for October points to 2016 as being the hottest year on record.
Although the El Nino event had a powerful effect on temperatures this was very short term. The heat from global warming is a continuing serious problem.

The COP22 meeting in Marrakech saw Pakistan become the 104th country to ratify the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.  Pakistan played a leading role in the Climate Change negotiations. The Prime Minister of Pakistan had led the delegation to Paris last December, becoming part of  the international consensus on Climate Change.

The ratification certificates deposited by countries are also known as certificates of concurrence.  What does this mean in reality?  Certificates of concurrence are a guarantee that the agency or group understands the Paris Agreement — and agrees to do its part in implementing the country's commitment under the agreement.

An amazing meeting in Morocco, as the Conference of Parties reviews global climate issues facing them in the wake of the 4th November historic achievement.  This meeting runs shortly after the World Meteorological Organisation confirmed that the last 5 years were the hottest on record.  Major issues include water - which is fundamental for food security, human health, energy production, industrial productivity, and biodiversity.
